WHAT EXACTLY IS GLASS? (DEFINITION)
Glass is an inorganic melt product made of quartz sand, soda and lime. It essentially solidifies without crystallization. Glass is a “tough (supercooled) liquid”.
WHAT IS FLOAT GLASS?
Today’s Float Glass manufacturing process has replaced virtually all earlier flat glass production processes. Float, as in “swimming on top” or “drifting” sums up and characterizes.

In the float process, an endless glass sheet moves out of the melting tank onto a liquid tin bath. There it floats on the surface of the molten metal, spreads and is kept at a sufficiently high temperature for a long time. As a result of the surface tension, the molten glass and the flat surface of the tin bath, an absolutely plane-parallel glass sheet is formed.

In the cooling channel and on the subsequent transport section, the glass cools down to room temperature so that it can be cut into smaller sheets.

What is ornamental glass?
GM ORNAMENTAL GLAS is glass produced in a machine-rolling process. It is made colorless or colored, with or without wire netting, with one-sided or two-sided structured surfaces. It is translucent, but with decreased transparency.
How to clean glass surfaces?
Glass surfaces must be cleaned regularly, the frequency of course depends on the degree of contamination.

 

It is best to use a lot of clear water and simple soft rags or sponges. In addition, commercial spray cleaners may also be used.

However, alkaline detergent solutions and acids as well as fluoride-containing agents should be avoided. Grease and sealant residues are removed with commercially available, non-aggressive solvents (spirit, isopropyl), then rinsed with plenty of water. Please note that with special glasses (sun protection glass, …) separate cleaning instructions apply.

What are the maximum dimensions for SECURMART® safety glass?
The maximum dimension is 2440 x 5100 mm.
Is glass also suitable as a material for stairs?
Yes. Laminated safety glass and toughened glass.
IS GLASS SUITED AS A BACK WALL / COVER FOR KITCHENS?
WHAT SPECIAL EDGES ARE AVAILABLE AT GLAS MARTE?
The special edge GM KONTOUR® is especially suitable for kitchen covers with a glass thickness of 12mm.
The edge is much more resistant to mechanical impact than other glass edges. Any float glass, ESG safety glass or GM ESG COLORMART® can be processed with this edge.

What is insulating glass?
The definition of insulating glass is determined in DIN EN 1279:

 

Multi-pane insulating glass is a glazing unit made of two or more glass panes
(Window glass, mirror glass, cast glass, flat glass), which are separated by one or more air- or gas-filled spaces.

What can insulating glass do?
By using different base products and different special gas fillings, it is now possible to produce object-specific, individually suitable multifunctional glasses. We distinguish between function and field of application.

 

  • Function: Heat protection, sun protection, safety, sound insulation, intrusion protection, design/visual appearance, wind and weather protection, lighting, shading.
  • Field of application: Residential or office spaces, roof glass, accessible or walkable glasses, facades, gymnasiums/sports facilities, with avalanche pressure, all-glass corners/all-glass joints.
What causes window condensation?
Inside condensation: Window panes can fog when they are colder than the air around them and if this air contains a lot of moisture. If moist warm air hits the cold pane, the air cools and releases some of the water vapor to the surface. In order to avoid this effect as far as possible, we recommend the installation of thermally insulated spacer profiles in combination with triple insulating glass panes. The moisture content in the room air should be kept as low as possible by regular, appropriate ventilation. In a passive house, this may be achieved through a controlled ventilation.

 

Outside condensation: This is created by the cooling of the outer panes in the night. The effect is additionally supported by the very good insulating properties of triple insulating glass. As soon as the morning sun warms up the outer pane, the outer condensate is dried up immediately.

How is sound insulation made?
Sound insulation is created by constructive measures and their various combinations:

 

  • asymmethric glass construction
  • wider spacers
  • Use of laminated safety glass with soundproofing interlayers
Does the spacer have an influence on the sound insulation value of soundproof glass?
Yes. The wider the spacer, the better the soundproofing.
Can special glass make better use of solar energy?
Glass is the only building material that makes the use of free solar energy possible. The regional building regulations also take this into account with the introduction of so-called solar gains. For this purpose, an insulating glass with tailor-made energy input is selected, so that heat gain and thermal insulation can help save heating energy.
Is there insulating glass with glazing bars?
There are two basic types:

 

  • Visible bars inside the insulating glass. This prevents contamination of the bars and allows continuous cleaning of the glass surfaces.
  • Bars on the insulating glass. Here, the window producer glues bars onto the glass. The bars therefore have a glass-dividing effect.
What is the g-value?
The g-value (total energy transmittance factor) is an indicator measurable only for glass.

 

It is the sum of the directly transmitted radiation flux and the secondary heat emission of the glazing to the inside. The g-value is determined according to EN 410 and expressed in %.

What is the U-value?
The thermal transmittance coefficient (U-value) is the central unit of measurement for the heat loss of a component.

 

It indicates how much heat per time unit passes through 1m² of a component, if there is a temperature difference of 1 Kelvin between the two adjacent sides. The smaller the U-value, the better the thermal insulation.The Ug-value is the heat thermal transmittance value of the glazing. It is either calculated to EN 673 according to DIN 4108-4 or measured according to EN 674 or EN 675. The unit of measurement is W/m²K.

What is the color rendering index?
The general color rendering index Rα indicates the influence of the spectral transmission on the color recognition of objects in a room that is glazed with insulating glass. The determination is carried out in accordance with EN 410, taking into account a reference light of the same or similar color temperature.
What is the UV transmittance factor?
The UV transmittance is the transmittance in the wavelength range from 280 nm to 380 nm, based on the incident solar radiation in this area (EN410).

 

What is the light transmittance factor?
The light transmittance is determined according to EN 410 for the radiation range from 380nm to 780nm, based on the standard illuminant D 65 according to DIN 5033, part 7, and on the light sensitivity of the human eye.

WHAT IS LIGHT REFLECTANCE?
The light reflectance indicates the percentage of visible light in the wavelength range of approx. 380 – 780 nm at the glass pane surface.
WHAT IS EMISSIVITY?
Emissivity is the measure of the ability of a surface to release absorbed heat back into radiation.
In normal float glass ε = 0.84 – that means 84% of the heat absorbed is emitted again.

With thermal insulating glass, one side is very thinly coated with precious metal. This low-emissive or “low-E” layer reduces the emissivity of today’s standard glasses to 0.03 – for top products to 0.01. In this case, only 1% of the heat radiation is emitted to the outside on the coated side and about 99% is reflected back into the building. At the same time, this significantly increases the surface temperature of the inner pane and thus the feeling of comfort.

WHAT IS THE PSI VALUE (Ψ)?
The use of thermally optimized spacers leads to additional energy saving and an improvement of the indoor climate. The thermally improved edge seal reduces heat losses in the transition region from the glass to the window frame. These thermal insulation properties are expressed by the Psi value. This is a length-related heat transfer coefficient that describes the thermal bridges of a component. In the case of windows, these thermal bridges mainly consist of the interrelationship of window frames, insulating glass (and its spacers) and the glass inset in the window frame.

This means that the psi value (Ψ) is usefully best in the system (frame + insulating glass). A separate consideration of the Psi value for the individual components (glass, spacers, …) is inconclusicve.

HOW CAN THERMAL CRACKS BE PREVENTED?
Glass surfaces made of float are to be kept free of heat-accumulating objects, such as: adhesive films, furniture, objects on the glass, radiators, support posts, partial shading, etc. If this is not possible, tempered safety glass or annealed glass must be used.
WHAT IS THE REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTANCE BETWEEN GLASS AND FURNITURE TO PREVENT THERMAL CRACKS?
In order to prevent thermal cracks, we recommend a minimum distance of 30 cm between the insulating glass pane and the furniture / objects.
AT WHICH ALTITUDE MUST INSULATION GLASS BE PRODUCED WITH LOW-PRESSURE?
For glass from an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. Two options are available:

  • Negative pressure: The glass pane is produced in such a way that delivery as well as installation can be done without the risk of fracture.
  • Pressure equalization valve: Here, the pressure equalization is to be accomplished by the window manufacturer both during transport and at the installation location.
IT IS RECOMMENDED TO USE TOUGHENED GLASS FOR ALL GLASS JOINTS / CORNERS?
For this application, we recommend an implementation with toughened glass for several reasons. Covering the joint / corner area is possible with enamel strips. Static or building law often requires it anyway. Thermal cracks are thereby eliminated.
DO THE ENAMEL STRIPS COVERING THE EDGE COMPOUND HAVE TO BE BLACK?
Enamel strips, which cover the edge compound, do not necessarily have to be black. If the used color is too light, however, the edge seal may show through and the necessary UV protection may be lost.
We recommend the use of black RAL 9004.
SHOULD THE CENTER PLATE OF A GLASS ROOF BE MADE OUT OF TOUGHENED GLASS?
The middle pane does not necessarily have to be made of toughened glass. However, as the risk of breakage due to thermal influences in the roof area is significantly higher, we recommend that the center pane be made of single-pane toughened safety glass.
CAN SUN PROTECTION GLASSES ALSO GET THERMAL CRACKS?
With sun protection glass there is the possibility that thermal cracks occur. In particular, solid-colored (absorbing) glazing should generally be carried out using toughened glass.

GM SLIDING AND HOLDING SYSTEMS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the types of GM SLIDING SYSTEMS?
There are bottom-running systems (GM LIGHTROLL®) and down-hanging systems (GM TOPROLL®).
Which types and which thickness of glass can be used in balcony sliding systems?
Glas Marte sliding systems can be used with glass thicknesses from 6 to 24 mm. There are sliding systems for toughened safety glass (ESG) as well as for laminated safety glass (VSG / ESG / TVG).

 

Due to the combination of locking pin (bolt) and bonding, the film is not squeezed and thus sagging (decrease of the clamping effect) is excluded.

Up to what height can balcony sliding systems from Glas Marte be used?
The sliding systems from Glas Marte can be used for element heights up to 3200 mm.
Which surface-types are available for the profiles?
Glas Marte systems are available with natural anodised (EV1) and C31-C35 anodised finishes as well as in all standard RAL coatings (special colors after consultation).
Does balcony and patio glazing provide soundproofing?
Yes, depending on the model, significant soundproofing improvements are possible.
How many levels of sliding glass are possible?
There are 2, 3 and 4-lane versions, providing the option of opening the balcony to a maximum of 75%.
How does the drainage of balcony sliding systems work?
Via the surface, through drainage slots in the visual field (no closed chambers).
Are the balcony sliding systems from Glas Marte "airtight"?
No, as these glazings are frameless cold glazings. They offer good protection against wind and weather and extend the balcony season, but are not comparable with windows.
Does Glas Marte have frameless sliding systems?
Yes, frameless sliding systems are used for balcony, loggia and terrace glazing.
Up to which widths can the individual balcony sliding glasses be made?
1/3 of the installation height is recommended, but the weight-related rollers and the maximum loads per system must be observed.
Are the balcony sliding systems lockable?
Yes, the systems for balcony glazing can be locked on request by means of pressure cylinder locks or locking bolts.
Can the brushes of the sliding systems freeze up?
This is practically eliminated because all profiles are made with hidden, inside brushes.
Are the sliding elements smooth-running? What quality is used on the rollers?
The plastic-coated stainless steel ball bearing rollers enable easy and noiseless movement.
Does Glas Marte also offer folding systems for balcony and loggia glazing?
No, we prefer pure sliding systems, as they are easier to assemble, can be variably opened and save space.
Are the Glas Marte sliding systems also suitable for shading?
Yes, the GM LIGHTROLL®  and GM TOPROLL® sliding systems can be used for this purpose.
Are the Glas Marte sliding systems also suitable for shading?
Yes, the GM LIGHTROLL® and GM TOPROLL® sliding systems can be used for this purpose.
Are there any balcony sliding systems especially designed for the renovation of facades?
Yes, that’s why Glas Marte has developed the system GM TOPROLL® PARAPET. The parapet glasses in this system meet DIN 18008 standards.
Do Glas Marte's balcony glazing systems have a rear ventilation system?
The overlapping of the sliding glass panes (50 mm) provides a constant rear ventilation.
What maximum glass weights can Glas Marte sliding door systems receive?
Depending on the system, a maximum glass weight of 150 kg can be used.
Are the glass panes mechanically secured in the down-hanging sliding systems?
Yes, each sliding glass pane is secured with two bolts in addition to the bonding. (Exception GM TOPROLL® BALANCE)
Are there any sliding door systems from Glas Marte that can be installed barrier-free (threshold-free)?
Yes, with the GM TOPROLL® 10/14 system, large openings can be made without a threshold.
Does Glas Marte have systems with Softstop?
Yes, the GM TOPROLL® 100 system can be realized with Softstop on one or both sides.
WHICH SLIDING DOOR SYSTEM HAS THE LOWEST INSTALLATION HEIGHT?
The GM TOPROLL® SMART system has a height of only 40 mm

There are round stainless steel shell handles (dia. 55 mm), square stainless steel shell handles (40 x 100 mm), g-handles and stainless steel bar handles.
ARE THERE SYSTEMS WITH GENERAL TYPE CONSTRUCTION APPROVAL (ABZ)?
Yes, the system  GM OVERHEAD for glass canopies has AbZ. with approval number Z.70.3-103. There are 3 approved holder diameters – 45, 60 and 80 mm.
WHICH IS THE HIGHEST AND WHICH IS THE LOWEST EXTERNAL DIAMETER FOR POINT-HOLDERS?
The smallest elevated holder is GM PUNTO 13 (Dia. 13 mm), the biggest GM POINT 80 (Dia. 80 mm). The smallest flush mounted holdeis GM PICO (Dia. 20/28mm) and the biggest GM SHIELD 60/80 (Dia. 60/80 mm).
DOES GLAS MARTE OFFER FLASH-MOUNTED HOLDERS?
Yes, from Dia. 20 mm to Dia. 80 mm.

WHICH SURFACES DOES GLAS MARTE OFFER FOR THE PROFILES?

Glas Marte systems are available with natural anodised (EV1) or C31-C35 anodised finishes as well as in all standard RAL coatings (special colors after clarification).

DOES GLAS MARTE OFFER FRAME PROFILE SYSTEMS FOR GLASS DOORS AND GLASS WALLS?

Yes, for glass doors there’s the GM ZARGENPROFIL 23/40 system and for glass walls (doors including fixed components) there’s GM ZARGENPROFIL 46/40.

DOES GLAS MARTE HAVE OVERLAPPING (shingle type) glass facade systems?

Yes, for example the glass edge holding system GM BRACKET S. The bracket is designed for the use of toughened glass or laminated glass with thicknesses of 8 – 12 mm.

DOES GLAS MARTE HAVE CLAMPING PROFILE SYSTEMS?

Yes, from 45 to 100 mm visible width. GM SOLAR is the ideal clamping profile for functional outdoor glass applications. Roof and wall glazing can be implemented with this clamping profile that is available in four different widths.

How do I get the price of a GM RAILING® all-glass railing?

What are the decisive advantages of all-glass railings?
1. All-glass railings – they are safe. The smooth glass surface without pillars, rungs and supports reduces injuries of any kind. It makes it difficult for children to climb them and even the desire to do so is usually no longer there, because they are see-through. Older people, on the other hand, prefer light floor surfaces without shadows as well as the improved overview.

 

2. All-glass railings – they offer protection. Noise protection and wind protection is often appreciated in all-glass railings.

3. Aesthetics. They are visually unintrusive and emphasize the space instead of the barrier. They are light, modern, open to views, non-verbal conversation and light.

How are individual designs, special shapes and curved elements implemented?
GM RAILING is planned and produced individually for the respective application (exception: standard formats with shortened delivery time). Most special shapes and special designs are possible.

 

Bent all-glass railing elements can be implemented in particular with the series Massive-U, Level-U and Side. If the bending radius is smaller than 2.500mm, a separate examination is required. The realization of curved elements in staircases (e.g., spiral staircase) can not be done with GM RAILING.

Which installation situations can GM RAILING® be used in?
GM RAILING is primarily used as an all-glass-railing fall protection.
In addition, the following applications are implemented with the GM RAILING series:

 

  • As a “glass fence”, offering privacy, wind protection, splash-water protection and sound insulation properties
  • As glass advertising spaces and labeling surfaces, building management systems, steles or signs.
  • Can be used as a room-high glass wall.
  • Glass clamping is a very popular method, which is used especially in constructional glass building.
What scope of services does GM RAILING® offer?
Consulting in planning and implementation, technical drawings or text descriptions, quotation, location-related clarification, factory planning and execution planning, submission of release plans.

 

Static proofs for AbP (general building inspectorate test certificate) and tests, individual production on the basis of granted approval, production and delivery, assembly or assembly support on request.

What is the maximum glass height of GM RAILING®?
The maximum glass height can easily exceed 1 meter. Depending on the system and the loads, these cases are checked by our technicians. In most cases, a handrail is to be installed at the corresponding legal height.
Is GM RAILING® also possible without a handrail?
It is generally possible to produce GM RAILING without a handrail. This must be stated when ordering. In Germany, handrails are mandatory for all-glass railings.

 

This has the following advantage:

The handrail serves as edge protection. In case of failure of a parapet element, the handrail is of crucial importance for residual stability. The use of outdoor railings can lead to unavoidable delamination of the laminated safety glass, a handrail covers the upper edge and thus reduces the risk.

Which versions of the handrail are available?
GM RAILING offers numerous handrail variations. In addition to stainless steel profiles, sanded or polished, wood sheathing in various forms and types of wood as well as aluminum handrails are available.
WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS TO REDUCE POLLUTION?

GM RAILING can be finished with UNICLEAN NANO surface sealant or covered with antisoiling coatings, e.g. PILKINGTON ACTIVE.

WHICH DESIGNING POSSIBILITIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR GM RAILING®?

GM RAILING can be designed with colored films, printed films or enameled colors. In addition, sandblasting, use of LED (Powerglass) or the embedding of photovoltaic cells is possible.

CAN I ALSO BUY GM RAILING® WITHOUT GLASS?

GM RAILING iwas fully and extensively tested with glass panes and profiles, the prefabrication is automated and manufactured with the highest process accuracy using a production line manufactured in special machine construction. For this reason, it usually makes no sense to deliver only subcomponents.

The choice of glass type and the required glass thicknesses correspond to the series and requirements. You don’t have to worry about this selection as well as the inspection of quality and the static and production-related connections in the case of a complete delivery of GM RAILING.

HOW LONG IS THE DELIVERY TIME FOR GM RAILING®?

GM RAILING requires extensive execution plans as well as the usual clarification periods, so that a delivery time of approx. 5-7 weeks is to be considered.

HOW MUCH ASSEMBLY TIME MUST BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION?

GM RAILING’s assembly time is a fraction of that of a conventional fixed-point or bolt-on all-glass railing. The assembly times of the substructure are very much dependent on the geometric situation, the construction quality, the accuracy of construction, etc. The mounting time for hanging and adjusting amounts to a few minutes per linear meter, in addition to handrail assembly and metal cladding.

HOW DOES THE ADJUSTABILITY OF GM RAILING® WORK?

GM RAILING is infinitely variable, quickly and precisely adjustable by means of threaded bolts in the tenth of a millimeter range. Then appropriate fixation of the adjustment depending on the series is applied.

WHY ARE GLASS BREAKAGE TESTS OF CENTRAL IMPORTANCE IN GERMANY?

1. According to DIN 18008, the effects of damage to any parapet element (including the failure of end plates) must be proven.

2. In case of failure of a parapet element, especially in the interaction of handrail and broken glass, this can best be  demonstrated by experiments, as depending on the glass choice (VSG from 2x tempered safety glass or VSG 2x TVG or VSG 2x float glass) and film thickness, the results of breakage tests vary drastically.

The broken glass has a partial residual stability or residual supporting properties. Depending on the type of glass, this can have a positive or negative impact on the overall system.

To date, no method is known to us, as to how the residual strength of broken glass can be conclusively demonstrated mathematically. For this reason, GM RAILING has performed hundreds of glass breakage tests with original components up to a single length of 4 m.

WHAT TO DO AFTER A GLASS BREAKAGE?

1. According to DIN 18008, the effects of damage to any parapet element (including the failure of end plates) must be proven.

2. In case of failure of a parapet element, especially in the interaction of handrail and broken glass, this can best be  demonstrated by experiments, as depending on the glass choice (VSG from 2x tempered safety glass or VSG 2x TVG or VSG 2x float glass) and film thickness, the results of breakage tests vary drastically.

The broken glass has a partial residual stability or residual supporting properties. Depending on the type of glass, this can have a positive or negative impact on the overall system.

To date, no method is known to us, as to how the residual strength of broken glass can be conclusively demonstrated mathematically. For this reason, GM RAILING has performed hundreds of glass breakage tests with original components up to a single length of 4 m.

CAN THE ALL-GLASS RAILING BE MOVED LATER ON?

No. GM RAILING is glued to avoid the occurrence of air gaps between the glass and the profile, allowing wedges, dirt, pebbles and the likes to slip in. In addition, this prevents rubber parts from moving out of place.
